זהו, סיימתי את The Well of Lost Plots, השלישי (מתוך ארבעה נכון לעכשיו) בסדרת Thursday Next של Jasper Fforde. קשה קצת להגדיר את הסדרה הזאת: סוג של בלש פנטסטי, אבל החלק הפנטסטי מתעסק (בעיקר) בעולם הספרות, באנשים שנכנסים לספרים ובדמויות מספרים שיוצאות ל"עולם האמיתי", עם כמות לא מבוטלת של ארס-פואטיקה (ותסלחו לי על הצרפתית). הספר הראשון, "פרשת ג'יין אייר", שגם תורגם לעברית, היה מוצלח מאד; השני (Lost in a Good Book) והשלישי ממשיכים לבדר, למרות שהמבנה העלילתי קצת פחות צפיד (שוב, סליחה) - יש קוי עלילה שלא כל-כך מתחברים אחד לשני, יש אפיזודות שלא קשורות לכלום, והגופה הראשונה מופיעה בפרק 17.
אבל בכל זאת, משעשע. הנה לדוגמה:

"Item two." The Bellman put down his clipboard and leaned on the lectern.
"Remember that craze a few years back in the BookWorld for sending chain letters? Receive a letter and send one to ten friends? Well, someone has been overenthusiastic with the letter U-I've got a report here from the Text Sea Environmental Protection Agency saying that reserves of the letter U have reached dangeriously low levels-we need to decrease consumption until stocks are brougt back up. Any suggestion?"
"How about using lower-case n upside down?" said Benedict.
"We tried that with M and W during the great M Migration of 62'; it never worked."
"How about reseplling what, what?" suggested King Pellinore, stroking his large white mustache. "Any word with the our ending could be spelt or, don'tchaknow".
"It's a good idea," put it Snell. "Labor, valor, flavor, harbor - there must be hundreds. If we confine it to one geographical area, we can claim it as a local spelling idiosyncrasy."
